November 2016: If Not Now, Then When?
Hello sweet friends, and blessings of Love and Peace to you all.
Before I journey too far ahead, I just want to quickly say: MELBOURNE GIG THIS COMING FRIDAY (TOMORROW) AT BAR 303! And NSW / QLD / ACT TOUR STARTS NEXT WEEK
Phew, now that I’ve got that off my chest I can relax into one of my customary rambling emails, and share some stories from the road, musings upon entering my 5th decade of Life, and hopefully some encouragement as we do our best to navigate these disturbing and turbulent political times.
As I type this early on Thursday morning in Australia (Wednesday in the USA), the world is reeling after the announcement that Donald Trump will become the next US president. Borne to power on a wave of fear, hatred, xenophobia, racism and misogyny, his election marks a crisis point across the globe. Who knows what will happen next?
So what do those of us with open minds and loving hearts do? Now, more than ever, it is vital that we maintain and nurture our own personal state of Love and Peace. Yes, of course many of us are fearful of the wave of change that has been set in motion, and what it may mean for ‘minority’ groups across the world (I’m sure that the bulk of the readers of my newsletters are unlikely to fit into the ‘white middle class Christian heterosexual male’ demographic – and if you do, then welcome!), but if we buy into a divisive and hateful mindset, then we become part of this hateful movement, rather than a vehicle with the power to change the tide. The change must begin with the individual. The world needs us now. Gaia needs us now. We can choose how to respond to this. Do we shut down and close up because of sadness and fear? Do we continue to peddle hopelessness and hatred on social media? Or do we open our hearts even further, and do our best to bring practical and loving help to those people who are on the frontline of the battle and immediately need our help – the millions of refugees worldwide, the brave folks at Standing Rock protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, and all who stand up to protect wilderness, Nature, animal rights, and the right of religious freedom?
THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE
The human story is long and tangled, and will never be defined by one particular moment in history. Life is bigger than this. It can be easy to get caught up in a single moment – whether in our own personal lives or in the political landscape – and forget that we are part of an epic Universe, a great cosmic event. One way to align ourselves with a broader perspective – one that transcends political and cultural difference – is to simply make time to witness Nature. Tim and I have just spent a month on the road, driving through some incredible landscapes in Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. I’m sharing some of the many photos that I took on the journey to remind you that this, too, is America. A continent of outstanding natural beauty. I’m not giving up on you America. You’ve been through worse and survived.
And it’s important to remember that Nature can be found not just in the epic wilderness, but also in our gardens, in the harvest that we glean from our vegetable plots, in our favourite tree in a city park, in the great and epic sky, the sunset, the moonrise. Remember to delight in the details. Stay mindful and present. Remind yourself that it matters.
ON TURNING 50: IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN?
It’s happened! I’ve crossed the threshold into a new decade, and I feel great about it. A fresh start, a new perspective. In this culture of ageism (especially against women) I stand up proudly and claim every single day that I have been gifted Life. I’m only halfway through my journey, and so much possibility and adventure lies ahead. So much to create. It was the Scorpio Dark Moon the day before my birthday, and I was fortunate to spend it at the wild Oregon coast. My friend and I found this cave, and I felt that it was a fitting symbol for the rebirth that I feel, and the excitement of new creation.
And just for fun, here’s a photo of me playing in the oceanside forest on the final day of my 40’s – gently high (hey, it’s legal in Oregon!), and becoming one with the forest fae. It’s good to remember to play. We are responsible for our own joy and happiness.
THE TAURUS FULL MOON
Next Monday / Tuesday the Moon will once again be Full. This time she will be wearing her Taurus dress – Earthy and luscious to mark the sacred polarity of Beltaine – the fertile Spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and Samhain, the ripe harvest of the Northern Hemisphere. This Taurus energy reminds us that Nature is generous and bountiful. There is plenty for all if we choose for there to be. This is a great time to embrace the energy of generosity and share some of our prosperity with those who really need it right now. Below are a few handy links where your donations will really make a difference:
At this point in my life I choose Love, peace, kindness, generosity, and epic creativity. I vow to follow my path of heart with honesty and integrity and to do all I can to live a life of purpose. I urge you all, no matter where you are in your own life, to embrace your own power and ask yourself ‘if not now, then when’?
Thanks for reading this long letter 🙂
With Love and Magic
